- Caractéristiques des personnages: CHARACTERS
MAITA
Maita is a twelve-year-old Asian girl. Her father, in severe debt, rents her for four years to the owner of a factory that produces Christmas stockings made by children.
Maita knows how to read and write and therefore earns the respect of the illiterate foreman, Mr. Wunan. Her talent as a storyteller and as a puppeteer, inherited from her father, garners her the admiration of the other children. They see her as their leader and big sister.
NAOSIN
At six years of age, she is the youngest child in the factory. Maita found her one day in an alley and convinced Mr. Wunan to hire her. She is the “baby” of the group; the one who makes mistakes. She is mischievous and loves to play practical jokes.
DENGTSIAO
He is the oldest and the worker who has been at the factory for the longest time. A little slow, his parents sold him to the foreman who treats him as his whipping boy. He is very strong physically and has the skilled hands of an artist. He is good at making small objects.
LIYEN
He was also sold to the owner of the toy factory, Mr. Kiyam. Mr. Wunan brings him in to replace Maita because he knows how to read and write. Intelligent and rebellious, all he can think of is escaping from the factory.
MISTER WUNAN
As foreman, he is the lord and master of the toy factory. He is authoritarian and sometimes violent. Wunan does everything in his power to hide the fact that he is illiterate.
THE FATHER
He makes his living and supports his family with his traveling puppet theatre. He hopes that Maita will follow in his footsteps.
ISSANE
Mythical character associated with light, life and hope. Issane is one of the Father’s shadow puppets.
Extrait « FATHER, (To Wunan) : If anything happens to her, you will regret it… / WUNAN : You should be happy for her. On top of paying off your debts, she'll learn a trade. / FATHER : She already has a trade. She's an excellent puppeteer. She will be the best. / WUNAN : Sure she will. / FATHER : Four years. Four years and not a single day more. / WUNAN : In four years, you'll thank Mr. Kiyam for taking her in. »
