Résumé A caustic portrait of how a couple, Frauke and Alex, met in Nazi Germany. Based on a true story, this sharp satire of the “responsible society” delivers a tale of two people who feel most alive when they are inches from death. In this context, illness becomes the best way to protect oneself… but also to reveal oneself.

- Décor: 1. Just a bystander
A dark room with no visible exit. High walls disappear upstage. A light flickers menacingly above an enormous desk. The Doctor, in a white lab coat, sits in his chair. Opposite the Doctor, an upstage door opens to reveal a bright light outlining an old woman, who, with difficulty, approaches the Doctor's desk.
4. Screaming is an instinctual response
Frauke and Alex sit silently on a sofa, smoking, not looking at each other. Upstage is a large translucent screen, behind which a small light projects the large shadow of a child's crib. A mobile turns slowly above the crib. Alex goes to look at the sleeping child. His outline is cut by and takes up almost the whole screen.
5. A cold war, perhaps?
The Psychologist's office. Frauke and Alex enter, intimidated and silent. They accept the Psychologist's invitation to sit down. The Psychologist observes them severely from his armhair.
6. Just a bad feeling
Night. Alex and Frauke stand by the sofa, she in a nightgown, he in boxers and t-shirt. He lights a cigarette. Above the crib, the mobile turns slowly.
7. On the house
A funeral home. A small casket, downstage. Alex and Frauke, still and silent, on either side. The Undertaker bustles about, lighting candles. He eyes the visitors impatiently.
9. I reject sincerity.
An armchair in the middle of a dark room. Frauke is sitting, smoking slowly, staring off into space. The walls are covered with mirrors.
10. The barbed wire of freedom
Alex is alone on stage, with a guitar, in a tight special. A bit of grey hair indicates he is in his forties. He lights a cigarette.
11. Alone. Dead. Cold.
A concert of coughing and swirls of rising smoke give the impression of battlefield. The General, an old man in a uniform, spins in his wheel chair while playing a military march, making trumpet sounds with his mouth. Beside him is Alex, now using a walker.

DOCTOR, POLITICIAN, PSYCHOLOGIST, UNDERTAKER, GENERAL (all doubled)
Extrait « FRAUKE : No. You have to embrace uncertainty. You have to hold yourself back, you have to surrender control in order to achieve innocence. A hopeless scream would be more appropriate than a call for help. / ALEX : There's not much difference. / FRAUKE : It's a great difference. Screaming is an instinctual response. I would feel I had betrayed myself if I handed the responsibility to another. »
