Résumé A successful medical specialist of adolescent girls' eating disorders, Constance suffers from bulimia. This unacknowledged contradiction between professional success and personal anguish plays itself out, sometimes violently, in relations with her husband and small daughter. Source of her conflict is the arbitrary stereotypes and authoritative traditions (found in books) regarding what it means to be a woman. A fantom figure from the past forces Constance to face her real emotions with honesty and lucidity. Extrait « CONSTANCE : I still don't have a lot of courage, but [...] I am starting to understand [...] perhaps I can begin to imagine a new language, and [...] perhaps in fifty or a hundred years there will be human beings who are going to write stories using this language. Perhaps. It may be that I'll lose my nerve. It may be that sometimes I'll let it all go, because it's not easy being alone against the world. But I promise to try. » |
