I'm Not Here [2013]
Original
Résumé Ariana, a pleasant young woman, tells us the story of her life in a torrent of words that describe a daily existence that’s unravelling, taking on water and slipping inevitably towards the brutal and unpredictable unknown. Between her boss’s cupcake schedule and the distractions of her life as an urban singleton, Ariana loses her way and breaks down: a total implosion. Nothing’s ever over because nothing ever starts. The translator, Alexis Diamond, won the Cole Foundation Emerging Translator Competition, in partnership with Playwrights Workshop Montreal. She was mentored by Maureen Labonté. There was a public reading on October 28th at PWM. Extrait ARIANA: "So we make cupcakes. / And we eat them. / Together. / And we say, “Oh, they taste so good!” / And we laugh. / And we love each other./ And we go back to our desks. /I buy mine at the grocery store— The cheapest I can find. / I dare them to say I don’t make them myself. /All us girls, including Dave, Mike and Zach, eat them. / Together. / And we all say, “Oh, they taste so good!”/ And we all laugh, and we love each other. / And we return to our desks. Sales are down 7%. / Oh, those cupcakes taste so good!" |
