Résumé After finding refuge in the remotest part of an imaginary Far North, an exiled nurse is given the responsibility of integrating four teenage stowaways, left on the icy shore by the moonshine delivery captain who found them in his hold. These four battered youngsters, being of the same country of origin as her, remind her of a past, a language, and a cultural heritage she spent years trying to forget. Things spin out of control when strange deaths start occurring in the village, and the nurse find herself caught in the web of a dangerous game which leaves her hanging between a sordid past and an uncertain future. A play of a rare poetic quality, Rock, Paper, Jackknife… tells of a humanity fraught with violence, racial tensions, and the tragic coping mechanisms which sometimes seem to point the way to survival. Extrait « MIELKE : I've only met them once, they had just come out of the freighter. Their compass was out of tune with the north, and the flat-footedness of dry land made them vomit all over. They looked at the sun and seemed surprised to find that life still existed… for the sun. They were covered with everything a body can spew out with the force of nature. (Beat.) I was told they're doing better… They managed to eat… (Beat.) A strange postcard they painted, with this country's sub-zero beaches in the background. The youngest of the four was dragging what we thought was a big teddy bear. From afar. We were wrong. A little boy, it was, with no more breath in him than an apple in a still life. (Beat.) They will be here soon. » |
